MODS

Mods?? Yeah, mods is basically the old mp3 format :) Like w/ midi files, just the notes are stored. However mods can produce much better music than midi ever can, cuz it uses custom instruments (effects, voices, anything!) A good mod-maker can produce perfect mp3-quality music at a really small size (often used in games, UT 4example). These are a few of my favorites:

MP3S

We all know mpeg3 don't we?! (compresses sounds to ~1/10th of their normal (wav-)size with little loss in quality). The ideal music format! Again, use WinAmp to listen to them (it's just the best damn music player for Windows).

But I don't even need a PC to listen to my mp3s: I've also got a Soul DMP-01 portable mp3-player. GREAT Player! It's resonably small, plays mp3/wma from any CD(R(W)) you put in it, does like 15 hours on two AAs, it was cheap, and uberl33t :)) WOO HOO!

You can get the music from the well-known Napster mpeg3-music community (together with Napigator of course, to select a Napster channel). An alternative is this new program called CuteMX. Because it's new and still beta, less songs are available there, and it's not entirely stable. However the prog is just great, 'cause of the fact you can share other files as well, like movies! Also has a great resume system.

How to make mp3s? Use LAME I say!! Really, lame rules! Fast enough and the best quality. Look here:
To encode with perfect quality (indistinguishable from CD) use:

lame -v1 -b128 -h -mj -q1

This will auto-change bitrate (at least 128, avg ~190 depending on the file).
You can also use:

lame -v2 -b32 -h -mj -q1

Will will produce smaller files, but quality is just below CD. Most people still won't hear any difference though, just the fine-eared ones ;)

I like most music I hear. Most of the time I just turn on Radio 538 to listen to the popular music. While programming or doing school-stuff I put on some Trance/Dance (Armin van Buuren, DJ Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, etc.)
